Catrin Mostyn Jones
Demo, slide show and hands on workshop

12 members had a lively presentation and demonstration by Bangor born, Catrin Mostyn Jones. She commenced with a colourful slide show that traced her early interests in ceramics and glass, at the same time giving us insights into the problems of making a start once college days are over; and of the need for resilience in the face of criticism.

Catrin's work is very modern and slightly 'wild' with curious structures and lively, bright colours. Her pieces developed from an interest formed during her student days when she shared digs with a student friend studying biology. Catrin pored over her friend's textbooks, fascinated by the cell-structures of sea creatures and the human body, at a microscopic level then translating her findings into art work.

Using buff, grogged stoneware or sometimes earthenware clay, she favours pinched (sometimes punched) pots, but also creates press moulds, to make pebble like pots, later making slip-cast or freehand additions. Tools include kid's toys, ladles, golf tees, and plaster filled balloons. Except for commissions, Catrin works spontaneously and new ideas slowly evolve. She uses bought in velvets, creating interesting effects by further firing with painted on pebble glazes. She currently enjoys the contrast of shiny and matt on the same piece.

Catrin gave a demonstration of her working methods and after lunch we attempted some work along similar lines, with varying degrees of success, in a very friendly atmosphere. We enjoyed a very pleasant day with a generous, lively demonstrator.
